Members Present: Steve Brown (chair /parent), Mac McCann (vice chair / parent),  Alysha Braithwaite (parent),  Michelle Brandon (parent), Kimberly Menssen (parent), Courtney Long (principal), Shelley Allen (teacher / SCC secretary), Karalee Birima (teacher),  Amy Skelton (counselor), Jessica Olmos (community facilitator)

  • SCC trainings  will be at the Canyons Center in the District Office at  9361 S. 300 East

5:30 – 6:15 p.m. Basic SCC Training for new members  and those wanting a refresher

6:30- 8 p.m. General SCC Training for all members

  1. PTSA Report~ Michelle Brandon

Current Objectives: 

  • Membership Growth: 51 Members
    • 3 free memberships given at Parent Teacher Conference 
  • Budget Approval:
    • The budget was approved, but more votes are needed for quorum
  • Reflections Program & Volunteer Opportunities:
    • Email asking for volunteers for the Reflections program and other opportunities
  • Community Involvement:
    • It was proposed to use Community Connect with PTSA to foster relationship building. Will be discussed in the upcoming council meeting
  1. Community School Facilitator Report~ Jessica Olmos
  • Day of Caring – Friday, October 11
    • whole school service day and building community lessons
    • supported by United Way of Salt Lake and CHG Healthcare
    • Last year we gave 902 hours of community service
  • Reality Town – November 7th
    • 50 volunteers needed
  1. Portrait of a Graduate Overview/Update~ Shelley Allen
  • The Circuit – Soledad
    • Some questions include: How does Panchito feel? What is something that was difficult for you to learn?
  • Day of Caring
    • Service Reflection 
  • The Circuit – Under the Wire
    • Some questions include: Who or what has helped you when you felt new or like you didn’t fit in?  What makes you feel comfortable at school?
  1. Counselors Report~ Amy Skelton
  • Student Connectedness Fall Survey
    • Baseline data: 98.2% of students report having a friend at MMS and 91.8% of students report knowing an adult they can go to for help
  • 8th grade will participate in Reality Town on Nov. 7
  1. Action Plan:  Safety Plan~ Connie Simons 
    • One of the questions asked on the safety plan is if the SCC felt the information presented in the district community council safety report helpful and easy to understand. https://www.canyonsdistrict.org/safe-schools/
      • All members need to review the information so we can determine if the information is helpful or not
    • The SCC  also needs to decide on the number one safety concern.
      • It was proposed that we focus on teaching and understanding the new standard emergency response protocol 
        • discussion about communication and the standard emergency response protocol 
        • members feel a focus on the standard emergency response protocol would be good
        • members will continue to think and brainstorm possible safety concerns and solutions over the next month 
      • Another proposal for a secondary concern could be internet safety 
      • Safe Walking Routes
        • The safe walking routes have not changed
        • The are posted on our school website
        • We need three SCC parents to sign off on the safe walking routes

  • Action Item Safety Plan
    • Motion to move the approval of the Safety Plan to next month: Connie Simons
      • Second: Mac McCann
      • SCC approves the move the approval of the Safety Plan to next month
  1. Action Item: Digital Citizenship Plan~ Shelley Allen
  • Digital Citizenship Plan includes making sure all staff, students and the community understand how to safely navigate the digital world including the impact of their digital footprint.
  • Parents would like more information on social media use and misuse, including ways to better help their students at home.
  • Parents would like to be included in planning training and information for parents
  • Questions answered by the SCC:
    • Does the SCC feel it has received enough information to determine if the filtering system and supervision practices are appropriate?
      • Yes
    • Does the SCC feel it has received enough information about the school’s educational efforts to instill in students a desire to be good digital citizens?
      • Yes
    • Does the SCC believe the school has a viable plan to present information on Internet Safety and Digital Citizenship information to parents in the community?
      • Yes, include parents in the planning process for training

Action Item Safety Plan

  • Motion to approve Digital Citizenship Plan as presented: Karalee Birima
    • Second: Alysha Braithwaite 
    • SCC approves the Safety Plan
  1. School Data Review~ Courtney Long
  • New Reading and Math tests to measure proficiency 
    • We are moving in the right direction
    • Need to find additional ways to close the achievement gap
  • Behavior Data
    • Most of our behavior offenses are happening in the classroom, which makes sense as students spend most of the day in the classroom 
    • We are having less physical aggression in comparison to last year
    • Thursday is currently the day of the week with the most behavior issues
  1. ATSI Designation~Courtney Long
  • We have improved in some of these areas
    • more information will be coming 
    • we have not received all the information and data 
  1. Teacher Student Success Plan~ Courtney Long
    • 75% of students will meet or exceed expected growth on the reading assessment during the current school year  
  • 60% of students will meet or exceed expected growth on the math assessment during the current school year  
  • On a monthly basis, at least 98% of students will be recognized through our school-wide positive behavior intervention system
  • By May of 2025, student connectivity and wellness will increase as measured by improved scores from the pre and post-wellness survey through the implementation of the after-school program, counseling supports, community facilitator supports, and lessons in homeroom on Portrait of a Graduate

  • Showed budgets and went over major items
