- Action Item: Identify Top Safety Concern ~ Pamela Brown / Mindy Robison
Previous ideas:
- Attendance
- Social emotional
- Behaviors (disrespect, defiance, fighting, language)
Discussion about how attendance, social emotional and behaviors are all connected.
Comments about how if students are not in school we can not help with social emotional
concerns. If we focus on attendance, it should help with social emotional and behavior
concerns. When students are not in the building, we are very concerned about their
safety and well being.
Action Item: Identify Top Safety Concern
Motion to approve attendance as our top safety concern: Benjamin Wood
Second: Alicia Woodward
Passed unanimously
Safety Concern Plan
#1 Safety Concern: Attendance. We are currently at 82% attendance based on the # of periods offered and the # of students present. When students are not at school, they are much more at-risk of engaging in dangerous behaviors. Students who regularly attend have higher test scores, better grades, and higher graduation rates.
Other concerns considered: We also discussed social emotional health, but decided that it is being addressed through our TSSP, and that attendance will positively impact social emotional well being as well.
Action Plan:
- We have created an attendance committee who is regularly looking at our attendance data.
- Increase social media and ParentSquare messaging around attendance to help educate parents about the importance of regular attendance.
- Have hired a behavior interventionist whose primary focus is on attendance and getting students to school.
- Scheduling meetings between administrators and parents whose students are missing over 10% of school to offer supports.
- After winter break, the attendance committee is going to roll out an attendance competition to encourage increased daily attendance in a positive way.
- Hired a full-time, licensed educator to run in-school suspension in order to minimize the need for out-of-school suspension, thereby keeping more students in school.
Motion to approve top safety concern plan: Alicia Woodward
Second: Jessica Dalton
